  Who are we?

The Board Group™ is an extensive network of CEOs who have created and served on more than 100 Boards of Advisors, Fiduciary and Public Boards.

Many members of the network are also members of two management organizations that are international leaders in management development and group process: Vistage International and Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO). Organized and managed by John Zaepfel and William Hawfield, leaders in Advisory and Fiduciary Board formation and management of Boards for private and family companies.

John Zaepfel
 
 

Mr. Zaepfel spent 15 years as a CEO, founding CPG International in 1985 as an outgrowth of a LBO. Companies in the group included Chartpak, Pickett Industries, Clearprint Paper, Planhold and Grumbacher. This $90 million operating company manufactured and marketed fine art, graphic art, engineering, drafting and media supplies through 13 domestic and international facilities. CPG was sold in May of 1989 to financial buyers.


Before forming CPG, Zaepfel was CEO of Chartpak and Pickett Industries, wholly-owned subsidiaries of Times Mirror. Zaepfel started his career with Crown Zellerbach in marketing and pursued his career in this functional discipline with Western Kraft and Sealed Air Corporation prior to joining Avery International.


Zaepfel has served as a public company director for Ideal School Supply, headquartered in Chicago; Varitronics, located in Minneapolis; The Troy Group, located in Santa Ana, California; RemedyTemp, Inc. in Aliso Viejo, California; and served as Chairman of the Board of Accordia in Southern California. He has assisted as a board member in four public offerings and has chaired two public Audit Committees installing Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.


He has served on 45 public and private companies and currently serves on 20 public, private statutory and advisory boards, chairing 12 as a non-executive chairman.


Zaepfel is a past member of the Young Presidents Organization and served as chairman of the Southern California Chapter. He is currently a member of the Chief Executives Organization.


Zaepfel is a graduate of the University of Washington and holds an MBA from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.

 
 
William Hawfield
 
 

Mr. Hawfield is a professional manager, international speaker and private Board process expert. During his 20 years as a professional manager, he was a division president at General Mills. After leaving General Mills, he started the Penguin's frozen yogurt franchise company. The retail chain grew rapidly to 130 stores and was sold to a French company.


He has coached over 200 CEO's and their teams on creating and implementing successful strategic plans.


He is an international speaker for Vistage, an organization comprising 14,000 CEOs worldwide. His topics are Personal and Business Success and Highly Performing Boards. He is one of Vistage's experts in Advisory Board creation and implementation.


Hawfield has served on Boards in a wide variety of industries including: distribution, construction, manufacturing, aerospace, financial services, advertising and restaurants. He is the Lead Director for Orco Construction's Board and serves as Compensation Committee Chair.


He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and has spoken on creating sustained, positive change in organizations through a strong Board process. He is a contributing author on Family Boards and has been published in the NACD national publication.


His formal education includes an undergraduate degree in Physics, an MBA in Management from the University of Virginia, and 22 years as a member of Vistage International.
